Statement – Stability, Security, Future: The Path Forward for the Middle East and Ukraine

The European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS) remains steadfast in its commitment to peace,
democracy, and stability in both Europe and the Middle East. As conflicts continue to shape global
affairs, we emphasise the urgent need for diplomatic solutions that protect civilians, uphold
international law, and ensure a future of security and stability.
The Middle East: a future built on two States
In recent weeks, surprising, concerning, and confusing remarks about the future of Gaza and the
broader Middle East have emerged, raising critical questions about the ongoing negotiations in the
midst of the Israel-Hamas war. These talks have reached a fragile juncture as the first stage of the
hostage deal nears its end, with 59 hostages still held in Gaza by Hamas, which continues to wield
significant influence over the Strip, further complicating efforts to secure their release and ensure
stability to the region.
In this context, proposals suggesting the forced relocation of the population of Gaza introduce
dangerous uncertainties in the future of the Middle East. While eliminating Hamas’s rule in Gaza must
remain a top priority, achieving lasting and sustainable stability requires recognising a solution that
upholds Israel’s security and right of self-defense while addressing the Palestinian right of
self-determination in a way that ensures the respect of international law and human dignity.
EUJS firmly believes that the only framework that can guarantee lasting security, stability, and
prosperity for both peoples is one where Israel’s sovereignty is fully safeguarded alongside a
democratic Palestinian state, free from the influence of terrorist groups.
Ukraine: defending democracy and stability
As we remain concerned about what lies ahead for the Israel-Hamas war after the end of the first phase
of the Hostage deal, we cannot help but worry about the potential developments of the Russia-Ukraine
war that could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The Russian invasion is not only an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty but a challenge to the democratic
values that define Europe. Similarly, historically correct narratives must remain our priority to ensure
the prevention of distortion, victim-reversal and the potential legitimisation of Russia’s invasion in any
peace negotiations. The Ukrainian people have endured immense suffering during the past three
years, and any discussion about ending the war must include them at the table. Their voices, rights, and
future cannot be negotiated in their absence.
A shared responsibility for peace
In light of the concerning scenarios unfolding, EUJS urges the international community to uphold
sovereignty, security, and democracy in addressing the future of regions. We call on world leaders to
prioritise diplomacy, protect civilians, and work toward sustainable solutions that ensure peace,
stability, and self-determination for all peoples. Now, more than ever, we must unite for a future of
dignity, safety, and lasting stability.
