EUJS Statement on Manchester Yom Kippur Terrorist Attack

WE STAND WITH BRITISH JEWS.
We stand with Manchester and everyone who was affected by yesterday’s vicious terrorist attack.
During Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, two people were murdered and several wounded in front of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester.
The Jewish community lives in a world where we have become accustomed to Jewish institutions and organisations relying on security measures at all our events and communal gatherings. Many of us have become desensitised to living behind bulletproof glass since a young age. The incident yesterday once again brutally highlights why these measures are necessary. What this brutal murder also clearly shows is how quickly words turn into actions. The current political climate, in which antisemitism can spread freely and is repeatedly relativised , significantly contributes to the shifting of boundaries of what is considered acceptable. In the end, it is real people who bear the consequences of this broken political discourse.
We are in touch with UJS and have offered our support as young Jews across the UK and Europe begin to comprehend the events of yesterday. Our thoughts are with the Jewish community in Manchester and the UK, all the survivors, as well as the families of the murdered and the injured. This hatred must end. Enough is enough.
