The European Union of Jewish Students stands with Australian Jews and everyone affected by the terrorist attack during the first night of Chanukah. 12 people had been murdered and dozens injured while a community gathered to celebrate the festival of light. Just over two months earlier, the attack in Manchester on Yom Kippur had demonstrated the same antisemitic threat. We warned that antisemitic rhetoric continues to spread and is repeatedly relativised, while social media platforms allow hatred and incitement to reach wider audiences. We call on political leaders and social media companies across Europe and worldwide to take antisemitism seriously. Our thoughts are with the survivors, the injured, the families of those murdered and the Australian Jewish community. We honour those who lost their lives by lighting the first Chanukah candle in their memory.
