The European Union of Jewish Students welcomes the publication of the first-ever EU Strategy on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life, which has been presented today by Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas.

The recent rise in antisemitic incidents & attacks made the urgent need to tackle such an alarming trend of hatred against Jews in Europe abundantly clear. For this reason, we are glad that the European Commission took on board the recommendations and input from contributing Jewish organisations, including EUJS, in developing a common strategy to protect and support European Jewish communities. Indeed, the strategy rests on three main pillars: combating antisemitism, fostering Jewish life, and educating about Holocaust remembrance.

We commend the European Commission for its efforts to involve young European citizens in the common fight against antisemitism, promoting the visit of young people to European Jewish heritage sites and supporting a network of Young European Ambassadors to promote Holocaust remembrance in education.

Additionally, we are pleased that the European Commission encourages its Member States to adopt the IHRA working definition of antisemitism. In the last years, EUJS has been tirelessly committed to the promotion of the IHRA definition among youth European organisations.

Lastly, we deeply thank the European Commission Coordinator for Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish life Katharina von Schnurbein, European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for their commitment and support to European Jewish citizens.
