Between the 23–24 of April, European Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism, Katharina von Schnurbein hosted, at the European University Institute Robert Schuman Centre a policy workshop on “Addressing Rising Antisemitism in Europe”. The event addressed three main topics: Antisemitism in its different forms – challenges in Western and Eastern Europe and effective instruments to counter it; Antisemitism in the middle of society – the challenge of recognition; and Antisemitism in the Muslim community – coalition-building and challenges in European multicultural societies.
Alina Bricman spoke on the panel “Antisemitism in the middle of society – the challenge of recognition” joined by Canan Yasar – Chair of Muslimische Jugend ÖsterreichJoachim Bergström – Special envoy for Antisemitism, Islamophobia and Racism of Sweden, Benjamin Steinitz – Head of Research and Information Centre on Antisemitism, Berlin (RIAS), James Renton – research fellow at the European University Institute and moderated by Richard C. Schneider, Journalist, author and former ARD correspondent in Tel Aviv and Rome.
Alina stressed the importance of including antisemitism in progressive intersectional discourse as well as the pitfalls of failing to do so – the distancing of Jews from progressive politics and the space given to far-right groups to fill in the gap. She briefed about the work of EUJS as well as the challenges faced by students on campus, especially related to BDS.
