Sex and the Community: Gender and Sexual Orientation in the Jewish world
Event type: Seminar
Organized by: European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS)
Location: London, UK
Have you ever taken part in Gay Pride? Have you heard of Sheryl Sandberg’s „Lean In“ or tweeted under the Hashtag EverydaySexism?
Chances are, yes. Because more than ever, gender equality and equal rights for LGBTQ are in the news and topics of public debate. Our societies have changed and continue to change in regards to gender and sexual orientation.
But let’s take a step back from society, the statistics and the news headlines, and look at what we know most best: Our circle of friends, family, student unions and Jewish communities. What’s going on there, and what’s going on with us? What do rabbis say to same-sex couples who want to get married? Are there orthodox feminists? Are student unions a welcoming place for LGBTQ students? Should – similarly to some countries’ quota systems – there be rules for more women in Jewish leadership positions? Are our communities going along with the social changes happening all around? Should they?
What do you think?
