The European Union of Jewish Students celebrates the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau

 

On January 27th, 2010, The Third international Forum “Let My People Live,” was held under the auspices of the European Jewish Congress (EJC), the World Holocaust Forum and Yad Vashem, and under the patronage of the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European parliament Jerzy Buzek, and the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynski.

The forum was carried out within the framework of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The forum will be followed by the State Commemoration Ceremonies at Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi Death Camp in Oswiecim.

The title and theme for the forum was “Remembering the Past, Confronting today’s Challenges.” Marking the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz is particularly a day of remembrance and a day of learning lessons for the present and the future.</p> <p class="spip">The event was attended and addressed by, amongst others, President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek, European Jewish Congress President Dr. Moshe Kantor, World Jewish Congress President Ron Lauder, Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev, Chief Rabbi of Tel-Aviv, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau and President of ECTR Aleksander Kwasniewski.</p> <p class="spip">Other attendees included MEP’s, Holocaust survivors, religious leaders and students. There was also a video messages presented by US President Barack Obama and a message by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.</p> <p class="spip">The European Union of Jewish Students led a delegation made of 40 students from all around Europe and 5 Darfuri  genocide survivors to attend to this event to remember the History and to bridge the gap between young leaders and the established leadership of Jewish communities in Europe.</p> </div> <p> </p> <div class="clear"></div> </div>
