Facebook Muslims to young European Jews: “Thank you”

Facebook Muslims to young European Jews: “Thank you”

On December 2nd the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS) issued  a statement condemning the Swiss vote on minarets. Following the release of the statement Irshad Manji, the author of  “The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim’s Call for Reform in Her Faith” and the producer of the Emmy-nominated film, "Faith Without Fear", conducted an experiment with Muslims on her Facebook fan page, asking them to post personal statements against anti-Semitism. The European Union of Jewish Students is delighted with the response received by Irshad Manji and are very touched by the many comments that thanked EUJS for its efforts in standing up against all forms of discrimination. EUJS is proud that Irshad Manji travelled to Brandenburg, Germany  on its behalf to address the 400 Jewish youth leaders who had gathered for the organizations annual event, Summer University 2004. All involved were deeply marked by her participation and are thrilled to see that the seeds planted then continue to bear fruit. The move by Irshad Manji and EUJS has shown how successful and meaningful the Jewish and Muslim connection can be on a grassroots level. We hope that this connection is only the beginning of a springboard for further dialogue, cooperation and collaboration between Jewish and Muslim groups. EUJS would like to thank Irshad Manji and all those that have posted a comment on the website. We would like to express our gratitude for having witnessed such an organic and unprecedented connection between Jews and Muslims regardless of nationality, political affiliation or any other division. The European Union of Jewish Students is the sole Jewish youth organization to have obtained the special ECOSOC Consultative Status at the United Nations .
