Sex and the Community: Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation in the Jewish World

Sex and the Community: Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation in the Jewish World

Date: 16/05/2017

Event type: Seminar

Organized by: European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS)

Location: London, United Kingdom

The restless work of LGBTQI activists in the past decades has brought society a long way forward, but there is a lot of work still to be done. In a period in which right-wing rhetoric and xenophobic public discourses are making a worrying comeback the silver-lining is that civil society has started mobilizing and standing up for inclusiveness, equal rights and the celebration of diversity.

But let's take a step back from society, statistics and news headlines, and look at what we know best: Our circle of friends, family, student unions and Jewish communities. What's going on there and what's going on with us? Is this social mobilization mirrored within these circles? Are communities supporting their LGBTQI members and making them feel at home? Do families feel that they are provided with a safe space to voice their concerns? Are services inclusive and open to all? What do rabbis say to same-sex couples who want to get married? How can we take the existing discourse on campuses and project it on our Jewish student unions?

Join EUJS, Keshet UK, IGLYO and our team of LGBTQI activists in London for a seminar that covers all these questions, develops tools and skills that help you get involved and connects you with Europe's most active Jewish students!

During this five-day program you will:

- Meet involved Jewish students from all over Europe

- Discuss with leading activists from Jewish organizations and community leaders

- Learn about best practices put in place by international LGBTQI NGOs

- Develop skills and tools that will enable you to transform your ideas into action
